Bellingen Music; Guitar Repair & Setup

Like anything, wear and tear can affect a guitar. Over time it is always a great idea to have your guitar serviced and setup to keep it playing and sounding at it’s best! Servicing a guitar is not for the inexperienced and it is always ideal to get the best person for the job. Bellingen musicians are fortunate to have Aaron O’Neil and his expertise in guitar setup and maintenance.

Aaron began his career as an apprentice at Sydney Guitar Setups in Annandale. Working here under the guidance of repairer and business owner Anthony Cameron, Aaron developed the skills and experience to take on any repair task with confidence. In this workshop Aaron also had the opportunity to work with Piers Crocker whose craftsmanship is well renowned in the repair industry. These influences combined to give Aaron a solid foundation in both the old and new schools of guitar repair practice and philosophy. The following years would see Aaron go on to develop his own unique techniques and individual setup style.

As well as repairing instruments, Aaron is a professional musician with extensive experience in both live and studio performance. This means that he truly understands the demands we place on our instruments. Not only do we rely on our instrument to function correctly, it must also be comfortable to play. A correctly set up instrument should feel like an extension of the body, allowing the musician to play through it with ease and concentrate on the music at hand. This is what Aaron strives to achieve with every instrument that enters his workshop.

In 2009 Aaron branched out and after a stint as a touring guitar tech he set up a home based guitar repair business. In 2014 with the success of this home business O’Neil Guitar Repairs was born and in 2015 relocated to Bellingen on the Mid North Coast of NSW.

My 2BBB FM playlist for 10/9/15

Every Thursday morning between 6 to 9am I do a program on my local Bellingen community radio station 2BBB. I love community radio as it’s all run by volunteers and has such a wide range of programs and presenters. There’s no corporate involvement, sales, commercials and the music is always so much better than anything you would ever hear on commercial radio. (I used to work in this industry and it left a real bad taste in my ears 😉 )

So I thought I’d give a run down of the music I’ll be playing on the show tomorrow morning. It’s always enjoyable creating a fresh playlist each week so here you go…

Bellingen Music: Wes Montgomery – Four on Six

I just made my playlist for tomorrow morning’s breakfast program on 2BBB FM here in Bellingen. As usual, I like to throw a classic jazz guitarist into the mix (amongst a whole range of music). I really don’t think you can go past Wes Montgomery for fluid amazing guitar playing. The influence that this guy has had on guitarist over the last half a century is huge! Here’s an interesting bit of trivia, he did’t use a pick but played with his thumb.. I was told by a guitar teacher of mine that Wes did this because he had a lot of kids at home and would practice when they were asleep and playing with this technique was the quietest way possible and he wouldn’t wake them 😉 Check him out and be inspired.. This is the song I’m going to play on the air tomorrow morning, from 1960 album The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery, Four on Six.
